Can you believe we’re already in mid-December of yet another year?!

While Christmas is still a few days away, soon we’ll be shifting our thoughts and discussions around the new year approaching. People will be making resolutions, sharing their “word of the year,” and dreaming about what the next year brings.

But what if 2020 is just more of the same? Wouldn’t that be disappointing?

This will be the reality for most people. Why is that?

This happens because they continue to do the same thing year after year. Someone once said that the definition of “insanity” is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results.

If 2020 is going to be better, you must become better. And it starts with your mindset.

The apostle Paul wrote in Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

So many people wonder what God’s plan is for their lives, but they don’t do their part to understand it. Paul says in this short, powerful verse that understanding God’s will begins with renewing your mind. Without an upgraded mindset, the next year will be more of the same.

You must become different if you want different results.

Your becoming different begins in the 6-inch space between your ears – your mind.

So, how do you renew your mind so you can understand God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will?

1 – Study His Word

The starting point of a mindset upgrade is the Word of God – the Bible. If you don’t know what it says, you won’t have a clear understanding of God’s overarching plan for all humanity. God does have a specific plan for your life, but it fits within His ultimate plan for the world.

Deceased missionary and author Steve Smith wisely wrote this in his powerful book Spirit Walk:

“Too often we ask the wrong question: ‘What is God’s will for my life?’ That question is self-centered. It’s about you and your life. The right question is ‘What is God’s will?’ Period. And then, ‘How can my life best serve that?’ To glorify God’s name, you must understand what God is doing in our generation-what He is about. Figure that out and then ask how you can best serve Him and His will.”

Invest dedicated time studying the Bible so you can understand what God’s overall will is, then ask Him how you are uniquely gifted to serve His purposes in the new year and in your generation.

2 – Dedicate focused time in solitude and prayer

Until you get quiet, the noise of the world will distract you from hearing God. This has been one of the greatest lessons that I’ve learned in my faith journey over the past few years. I am an action-taker. Being still and quiet is a challenge for me. However, this is what has led me to walk by faith courageously each day into uncharted territory.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

It is very challenging to be still in our hectic, noisy world, but it is vital to your spiritual growth. It is critical to hearing from God. It is the key to learning the next steps God wants you to take into each new day, year, and season of life.

Schedule time for silence and solitude. Then guard it with your life. When you do, simply ask God what He wants to say to you, then listen intently with paper and pen in hand to write down impressions, prompts, and clear directives that He gives you.

3 – Seek out a spiritual mentor

You were not meant to go through life alone. You were certainly not meant to go on your faith journey alone. You were made to be in community with others. You were made to learn from those who are older and wiser. You were made to pass on what God has taught you to the next generation.

In order for the new year to be better than any previous year, you need someone who is committed to walking alongside you as a guide.

I’ve had many leaders fill this role in my life over the years. Without them, I would have been lost and stuck. However, God has graciously provided spiritual mentors to be my earthly guides in critical seasons of life. I’m forever grateful to Him and them. You need them in your life as well.

Who around you has been following Jesus for a long time? Whose life reflects the love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and joy that only God can give? When you identify those people, ask them to mentor you. Share your hopes and dreams with them. Ask them to share their wisdom and to pray for you. You will be amazed at how far you can grow and go with committed spiritual mentors helping you navigate life.

2020 can be a phenomenal year for you if you intentionally implement these three action steps. God does have more and better for you. He is committed to transforming you into the best version that He created you to be. However, you have a part to play. Make the commitment right now to renew your mind so you will be transformed and capable of being and doing what God created you to be and do.

You can do this.

I believe in you.

Until next time…make today GREAT!
