Many people long to know God’s purpose and plan for their lives, but spend years in a frustrating effort without receiving the clarity they desire. Did you know there is a specific prescription for understanding God’s will for your life in the Bible?
In Romans 12:2 NIV, the apostle Paul writes “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Did you catch it?
Many people gloss over this verse without unpacking the deep insight we can gain. We catch the phrase “do not conform to the pattern of this world,” but miss the next statement of “but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
One challenge is that renewing your mind is YOUR responsibility. Similar to becoming smarter in any given topic, you must put in the work to renew your mind. Filling your mind with Scripture is an integral first step that you must continually take. If you want to know God’s will, you have it written out for you in the 66 books of the Bible. However, we mostly want to know what God’s will is for ME. That’s another issue altogether.
We often want a clear customized step-by-step plan before we’ll even obey God’s general plan for mankind.
We want to know what job to pursue, who to marry, where to move, etc. without obeying God in the very things He has already told us to do.
For instance, Matthew 28:18-20 says “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Have you done this?
Do you go about each day with the focus of making disciples and teaching them to obey everything Jesus commanded us to do?
I don’t say this to condemn you. I’m guilty all the time of this issue. Rather, we should be challenged to realize that while we wait in frustration for some divine revelation of God’s specific will for our lives, we overlook or ignore His obvious will.
God’s will is for you to be a faithful, growing follower of Jesus and to help others become the same. Period.
Where you do that, how you do that, and whom you help will become obvious as you keep in step with the Spirit daily doing the work of making disciples. (see Galatians 5:25)
Are you fortifying your faith daily in prayer and studying God’s Word?
Are you praying for the needs of others?
Are you asking God to guide you to have spiritual conversations with coworkers, neighbors, family, and friends?
If not, these activities are the first steps of renewing your mind so that you know God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will.
God loves you. He’s not leaving you hanging. Rather, He has already told you His will for your life in His Word. It’s now up to you to seek Him daily and obey what He’s already said. Do this and your next steps will become clear.
God has GREAT plans for your life. Don’t miss the exhilarating experience of those plans by failing to see the obvious first steps.
Seek Him first. Obey His commands in Scripture. Then watch what He does to guide and provide for you in the specific ways that you desire.
Until next time…make today GREAT!
