Many people believe in God, but few experience the full, rich, satisfying, abundant life that He wants to give us.
Why is that?
I believe it is because we don’t do our part. God is always present and available to us, but we often overlook or ignore Him. I am beginning to read a new daily devotional book for 2020 called “Experiencing God’s Presence” by Chris Tiegreen. I was reminded today that God always wants to be close to us, but we have a part to play in drawing close to Him. If you want to develop deep faith, you must commit to digging deep. You can’t experience the abundant life He has planned for you by holding onto the reins of your life. You must trust and let Him take over. That is what faith is all about.
So, how do you do this? Consider these three key action steps:
1 – Seek God daily
Deep faith begins with a deep relationship that is developed over time. Just like any healthy relationship, time spent together is investing in the relationship that compounds over time. If you are to trust God fully, you must get to know Him daily. You will face difficult days and seasons of life. We live in a broken, sin-filled world. If you haven’t engaged in the relationship that God offers you in the good, easy seasons of life, your faith will waiver or crumble during the difficult ones. Commit to a daily quiet time where you read God’s Word (the Bible), pray, and simply listen for what He wants to say to you. Your relationship with God won’t be developed in the noise and busyness of life. That’s where He gets squeezed out. Instead, block out time for solitude where it’s just you and Him. Invest in your relationship with your heavenly Father.
2 – Surrender control
It is so difficult to give up control. We’ve been raised in a society that says that anyone can become “self-made” by working hard and taking control of their lives. Yes, we need to take responsibility for our lives, but we must also simultaneously choose to surrender control to God. He knows what the future holds. We don’t. He knows what’s best for us. We don’t. He has created us with unique, specific plans, but we often stubbornly set our own course without asking what His will is and then we wonder why life feels hard and complicated. When we surrender control, it’s like jumping into a river and letting the current do the work or like putting up our sail on a sailboat and letting the wind take us to our destination. Is it scary to surrender and trust when we don’t know how everything will turn out? It can be – at least until we truly trust the One who is taking us on the journey. You can try to do everything in your own strength and experience a certain level of success, but when you surrender control and let God guide and provide for you, you’ll be able to experience more than you could have ever asked or imagined.
3 – Follow His lead
Once you have made the decision to seek God and surrender control, the only thing you need to do is follow His lead. Ask Him where He wants you to go today, what He wants you to do, and who He wants you to engage or serve. Think of it this way – if your boss gives you clear directives on where to go, what to do, and who to interact with and you do these things, you will be rewarded. If you don’t obey, you will be disciplined. While God is loving and gentle with us, He also has clear directives to give us. When we obey, we find peace and joy as we experience His intended results. If we are stubborn and choose to reject His plans, we will experience frustration or failure and cause Him to discipline us until we choose to follow His ways. A loving parent doesn’t let their child do whatever he/she wants. Instead, they direct and correct them, which is in the child’s best interest. God is our loving, heavenly Father. He disciplines those He loves, not for His benefit, but for ours. When you choose to follow His lead each day, you will go places you never dreamed, meet people you never knew existed, and experience results that you could never have imagined.
Seek God daily. Surrender control. Follow His lead. When you consistently implement these three action steps into your life, He will take you deeper into a relationship with Him and take you places to experience things you never imagined could be possible in your one precious life. God loves you too much to let you settle for small, mediocre living. However, He won’t force His will on you either. You need to make the daily choice to connect with Him, surrender, and follow His lead. When you do, that’s when you’ll be on the path to experiencing the full, rich, satisfying, abundant life that Jesus said he came to give us in John 10:10 – “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
