I find it interesting that at a time when we are more connected than ever in the history of the world we use the tools that connect us to also divide us. A quick scroll through social media posts reveals so much. Is it possible that what we post online reveals what is truly in our hearts rather than what we would ever say face to face?

Whether it’s bantering about sports, politics, or any other numerous issues, we seem to be looking for a fight rather than peace. I’m confident that we wouldn’t say half as much face to face that we do through internet platforms.

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United States of America. We are remembering and celebrating a man who promoted love and unity instead of division and hate. I am disturbed that the vision he shared in 1963 is being hijacked today. The United States is a diverse nation. We are essentially a nation of nations. The world has come to this one land over the past 200+ years. That means that diversity is simply part of who we are. But can we experience unity amidst such diversity? I believe we can.

Unity does not require uniformity. It does not require us to agree with everything that everyone thinks or says. It does not require “group think” which becomes mindless. It does require that we love and respect one another. It does require us to look after the well-being of our neighbors, coworkers, family, and friends whether we agree with them or not. It does require us to set aside our pride. It does require us to display the posture of love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness.

To be a unified people, we must serve one another. We must value one another. We must do to others as we want them to do to us. We must meet one another’s needs when we have the ability and resources to do so. We must become others-centered rather than self-centered.

Today, let’s choose to BE BETTER. Let’s choose to DO BETTER. Let’s choose to LOVE AND RESPECT ONE ANOTHER. Let’s choose to SEEK UNITY AMIDST DIVERSITY. This is a key step in leading the GREAT Life that God created us to live.

Make today GREAT!
